Nar Ho na Nirash karo Mann ko….

Ankur (1974)

It was a Sunday afternoon and after reading several stories from Byomkesh collection I was searching for those episodes of BB on youtube. To my great disappointment there were no new entries posted by anybody and one older account has already been suspended by YouTube Admin which had few great episodes in the series. I switched on my TV set in hope of getting some fresh entertainment (I know that it is expecting too much from Idiot Box if you are really searching for some clean & fresh content…Alas!!….gud old DD days are gone.)

Byomkesh Bakshi

Byomkesh Bakshi

Still from TV series Byomkesh Baskhi

Byomkesh Bakshi is a fictional detective created by Saradindu Bandopadhayay in Pre-Independence era. Loosely based on Sherlock Holmes, this detective (read The Truth Seeker – Satyanveshi) is very popular among readers who love whodunits. Byomkesh is helped and accompanied by his friend & writer Ajit Banerjee in most of his ventures. Though modelled on foreign detectives like Sherlock & Poirot, stories are quite unique in content & style. Unlike his foreign counter parts Byomkesh is not eccentric & very much Indian or you can called our desi sleuth. Ajit on the other hand, works as perfect friend & companion to him.

Byomkesh has been portrayed by several acclaimed actors of their time on small as well as big screen. Who can forget Rajit Kapoor & K.K. Raina in famous TV serial on Doordarshan playing this Bengali Investigator. Uttam Kumar has played him in ChiriaKhana directed by none other than Satyajit Ray.

The original stories were written in Bengali but there are few translations available in English. One can purchase them online or from any good bookstore like Landmark or Crosswords. For anyone who is interested, here they are with their publishers.:

1) Picture Imperfect and Other Byomkesh Bakshi Mysteries by Penguin books.
2) Byomkesh Bakshi by Rupa
3) The Mystery of the Fortress & other stories by New Age Publishers.
